Offered here is a complete Cartier Tank Basculante, reference 2390,is a highly desirable full set of one of Cartier's most innovative and collectible Tank models. Unlike the more commonly encountered quartz examples, this reference is fitted with the sought after manual winding mechanical movement, adding an extra level of charm and appreciation for traditional watchmaking. The stainless steel case is paired with the iconic silver guilloché dial, bold black Roman numerals, blued sword hands, and signature blue cabochon release, creating a timeless aesthetic that is unmistakably Cartier.
One of the most fascinating features of the Tank Basculante is its ingenious pivoting case. By gently releasing the top latch, the watch slides forward and flips within its frame before locking securely into place. Originally conceived in 1932 as an elegant sports watch, the Basculante was designed to protect its delicate crystal during activities such as polo, tennis, and golf by allowing the case to rotate and present its solid caseback outward. Today, while few owners will use it for sporting pursuits, the mechanism remains one of the most captivating and conversation-worthy complications in Cartier's history. It can also be positioned upright, making it a charming miniature desk clock when displayed.
This particular example presents in very neat overall condition, with a crisp dial, attractive case, and smooth, precise operation of the Basculante's open-and-close flipping mechanism. The manual winding movement offers the engaging daily ritual that mechanical watch enthusiasts appreciate. Complete with its original box and papers, this Ref. 2390 represents an increasingly difficult configuration to find and is especially appealing to collectors seeking a mechanically powered Basculante rather than the more common quartz variants.
It is a remarkable example of functional Art Deco design that continues to stand apart over 90 years after the concept was first introduced.
