Introduced in 1922 as a fresh take on the classic Cartier Tank, the Cartier Chinoise reimagined the familiar silhouette with a case defined by two layered horizontal bars above the dial. This detail draws extra attention to the lugs, typically understated on a Tank, and echoes the architectural lines of traditional Chinese temple entrances. The design reflected the fascination of the 1920s with East Asian art and aesthetics, which stood out sharply from the styles popular in the West at the time.

True to Cartier’s habit of revisiting its heritage, the brand brought the Tank Chinoise back long after its original run. As part of the Cartier Privé series, which highlights historically significant designs, Cartier released the WGTA0075 in 2022 as a limited run of 150 pieces. Crafted in 18k rose gold with a radiant silver sunburst dial, this model updates the Chinoise’s early design language with a more elongated case, shaped to fit the expectations and tastes of today’s Cartier enthusiasts while maintaining its iconic character.
